enchantment

I'm very excited to be a part of the Plates to Pixels 2013 juried exhibition, Enchantment. I am even more excited to have received an honorable mention! It is a beautiful group of images selected by Plates to Pixels and Diffusion Magazine founder, Blue Mitchell.

fashion tintypes

I photographed Jamie Gordon West's dress for the Trash Fashion and Costume Contest, part of the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival. She made the dress out of recycled plastic milk cartons. It's amazing. The show is this Friday, November 2, 2012 at 7:00PM at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

A few polaroids taken in between tintypes sessions with Jamie Gordon West, modeling her recycled dress, with my new (old) Polaroid 440 Land Camera. Top photo was taken by Spencer Carl.

test shots

Took a few test shot of Spencer while figuring out my new darkroom. They came fogged so I switched out my silver and that seemed to do the trick. I still like them though. Woofie M. Bubbles makes an appearance in the top photo.

beginnings

Finally started getting our garage organized so I can set up my darkroom! There is still a lot of work to be done, but it is exciting to see it start to come together. I just purchased a darkroom sink (for a steal on craigslist!) that I need to set up as well. Will post more when it is complete.

Finally got around to taking some good photos of my two favorite handmade books. Hope to be making some new ones soon. Enjoy!

nantucket slides

I brought my 4x5 camera on my trip to Nantucket a few weeks back and was able to take a few slides. I have never worked much with slide film before, but seeing the brilliant colors makes me want to do more with it here in New Mexico.

12x20

Some portraits of my tintype friends aka "the wooden camera club". We all shot 12x20" plates using Gordon's larger than life camera. It was extremely hot, not to mention the first time the camera had been used in a good while, so we had some kinks to work out. These are a couple I was happy with. They aren't perfect, but hey I'm still learning. And if there is one thing working with alternative processes has taught me, it is to embrace the imperfections.

cyanotype day!

I visited Rio Grande Elementary School this past Friday to make cyanotypes with all the students. It was their field day, so all the students came to me in groups of 15-20 for 25 minute "stations". Using large sheets of pre-coated cyanotype fabric (8x10 feet, cotton) we created large scale photogram murals.  We made a total of 9 murals including about 150 students from grades K-6. We had a blast and got some great results. Big thanks to Wilson Scanlan (owner of Verve Gallery) for thinking up, organizing and funding the event. The murals are currently on display at the school.

This is a slideshow I made for Second Look's lecture series "TalkPhoto" presented with the Bristol Festival of Photography. You can also view this video on youtube.

happy pinhole day!!

Took some paper negatives pinholes today in honor of Worldwide Pinhole Photography day! The top three are self portraits and the last is a portrait of my new friend Fiona with some lilacs she picked. Thanks to my good friend Micaela Butts for letting us use her darkroom.  Check out Micaela's website and zine Oracle Tweed to see her work!
